Stenehjem was born in Mohal, North Dakota. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1971 and Bismarck State College in 1972.Bismarck police reportedly answered a medical call at the Attorney General’s home at about 8:27 a.m. on Friday, January 28, 2022, and from there was taken to Sanford, where he later died.
Stenehjem is North Dakota’s longest-serving attorney general.Stenehjem is 68 years old. However, the cause of his death was not disclosed.

He attended the University of North Dakota and the UND School of Law, graduating in 1977. Stenehjem was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1976, and served two terms until 1980
