Tommy Kinane Obituary, Death: It is with great regret that I learned of the passing of Tommy Kinane, a legend in Irish racing. He will be greatly missed. Tommy was born on 3 October 1933 in County Tipperary. His most notable success came in 1978 when he won two Champion Hurdles at Cheltenham on the Des McDonogh-trained Monksfield, This is his first time. In the process, he defeated Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse, finishing second and third respectively. Although Tommy had many victories during his illustrious career, he only rode three horses to victory at the Cheltenham Festival.
The other two wins were by Kil Coleman in the 1977 County Hurdle and by Strangfield in the 1979 Supreme Novice Hurdle. The victory was one of three for Tommy at the Cheltenham Festival. In 1980, Tommy resigned as a professional jockey. However, the story lives on to this day, when his son Mick was selected as Champion Apprentice in 1978. In the same direction as his father. Mick continues to cement his reputation as one of the most accomplished flat jockeys in the history of the sport.
