A retired police officer was killed by terrorists who opened fire on him inside a mosque in the Baramulla area of north Kashmir, according to the police yesterday.
According to a statement made by a police spokeswoman on X, “Terrorists fired upon Shri Mohd Shafi, a retired police officer at Gantmulla, Sheeri #Baramulla, while he was praying Azan in the mosque.” Shafi ultimately succumbed to his injuries when he was shot.
He stated that the area has been isolated by a cordon. The police stated that they are awaiting further details.
According to the news agency KNO, the officer who passed away was 72 years old and is survived by his wife, with whom he had two sons and a daughter.
Just a few days ago, militants ambushed two army trucks in the Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of five troops and injuries to two others. The attack on the officer came just a few days after that.
Poonch is currently in the midst of a large search effort, with the goal of locating the perpetrators of the attack, who are said to be hiding in the thick forest covering the area.
The government of Jammu and Kashmir made an announcement on Saturday regarding compensation for the three civilians who were discovered dead in the region. It is believed that the security personnel had picked them up for questioning.
