Stephen Sachs posted on social media that Shirley Jo Finney had died after a long illness, “I am heartbroken beyond words to learn of her passing. I was so depressed. She has been my theater soul mate for 26 years.
Shirley Jo Finney born July 14, 1949, in Merced, California, is a renowned actress and award-winning theater, television, and film director.
McCarter Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, Goodman Theatre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Cleveland Playhouse, Fountain Theatre, Los Angeles Theater Productions, Crossroads Theater Company, Humana Actors Theater of Louisville, Sundance Theater Workshop, The Mark Tapper Theater, the Kennedy Forum Center for the Performing Arts, and the Washington State Theater are just a few of the notable regional theaters where she has directed plays.
She also directed Winnie, a global opera performed entirely in South Africa based on the life of political icon Winnie Mandela.
Miss Finney has won numerous honors for her directing work, including the 2017 Denham Fellowship from SDCF, the Milton Katzlis Distinguished Career Award from the Los Angeles Theater Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Stage League Cheer Award, the Los Angeles Theater Review Home Awards, Los Angeles Weekly Awards, NAACP and Santa Barbara Independent Awards.
