Matthew Weis Obituary: Leavenworth Police are mourning the loss of 27-year-old Police Officer Matthew Weis. Officer Weis died unexpectedly on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at his home in Leavenworth from what is believed to be medical complications.

Matt came to Leavenworth Police from Bakersfield, California to attend the University of St. Mary and play baseball. Matt was an intern at the Police Department and was hired immediately upon graduating from St. Mary. Matt was recently selected as the newest member of the SWAT Team.

Matthew Weis Education & Career

Weis, 27, moved to the Kansas City area from Bakersfield, California, to attend the University of Saint Mary on a baseball scholarship.

While in college, Weis interned with the Leavenworth Police Department before joining the department after graduation.

While studying, he interned with the police and was offered a position immediately after graduating from St. Mary’s University. Most recently, he was named the newest member of the SWAT team. With over 15 years of playing experience and approximately three years of coaching experience, Matt caught the attention of the organization’s head coach during his tenure at Saint Mary’s University from August 2017 to May 2020.

After his college career, Matt was active as a pitcher for the Bakersfield Train Bandits, a famous semi-professional baseball team in California. This opportunity allowed him to connect with numerous players from across the country, allowing him to learn from and impart more insights about the game.
