LASD Suicide: Four employees of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have died by suicide within a 48-hour period this week. The Sheriff’s Department says three were active members of the agency and one was retired.
A captain was found dead at his home in Saugus on Monday morning; hours later, a retired deputy was found dead in the Antelope Valley. Also Monday, a jail official known as a custody assistant was found dead in the Santa Clarita area, law enforcement sources said.
Darren Harris Suicide
Prior to this, Harris worked as a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Office. After that, he rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant in the Sheriff’s Information Bureau and eventually a captain in charge of the department’s transportation division.
According to department sources, he was a commander when he passed away. At around 10:30 a.m., Harris is said to have shot himself in the head at his Santa Clarita residence.
Greg Hovland Suicide
In the second incident, retired LASD officer Greg Hovland was involved. He was a longtime Antelope Valley sergeant who was discovered deceased at his Quartz Hill home on Monday. Tuesday afternoon, the medical evaluation was still ongoing.
At 4 p.m. on Monday, there was another suicide reported in Stevenson Ranch. The 60-year-old lady worked as a custody assistant at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, according to LASD officials.
