About Emir Sheikh Nawaf
Sheikh Nawaf assumed the role of emir in 2020 after the passing of his predecessor, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, known for his diplomatic efforts. Sheikh Nawaf, previously Kuwait’s interior and defense minister, faced domestic challenges, including political disputes and the overhaul of the welfare system, limiting the sheikhdom’s ability to take on debt.
Despite generating substantial wealth from oil reserves, financial constraints led to difficulties in meeting public sector salaries. In 2021, Sheikh Nawaf issued amnesty decrees for Kuwaiti dissidents, defusing government standoffs. Kuwait, with the Gulf’s freest parliament, restored ties with GCC states, allowing focus on internal issues. As a crucial U.S. ally, Kuwait hosts American troops and the U.S. Army’s Middle East headquarters.
