The inquest learned that John kept up his physical fitness and strength long after putting away his gloves. But because of his arthritic condition, he was unsteady and sometimes trip over himself, especially after drinking.

He had health issues in the years leading up to his passing. He also had type 2 diabetes, angina, and arthritis. But John proved his fortitude by enduring many operations and hospital infections before succumbing in the end. On April 27, he passed away.
