Who was Ian Robinson?
Ian Robinson famously known as Big Robbo” was a formerly a fabulous judo competitor and a coach of Middlesbrough Judo in United Kingdom. Already an international judo player Ian decided to give rugby a try and joined Acklam a couple of years after Acklam Rugby Club was formed
Although he had never played before Robbo soon became a formidable prop, a fantastic scrummager. Ian and his younger brother Keith were Acklam Rugby Club props when they won the Yorkshire Silver Trophy in the 1979/1980 season. Robbo also coached Acklam junior players, many of whom went on to have really successful rugby careers, including his son Martin. Ian carried on playing well into his 40s, for the Talbots which was at that time Acklam’s veterans team.
Ian was a lovely man but he was always competitive on the pitch, although by the time he played for the Talbots he wasn’t the most mobile. He also told the worst jokes ever. Ian was a loving family man, a great friend and club legend. He was loved and cherished by Lorraine, Martin, Tracy and all his family.
Funeral Arrangements: Ian Robinson’s funeral will be held on Monday 18th of December 2023 at 2pm at St Paul’s church Thornaby then to Stockton crematorium then onto Acklam rugby club to tell stories.
