Who was Gary Winnick?
Gary Winnick was born in New York City in 1947 and raised on Long Island, NY. Mr. Winnick, proud of his roots in Queens and a graduate of Roslyn High School, remained closely tied to his alma mater, CW Post College, now LIU Post, contributing generously and commemorated through the Winnick Dining Hall.
His family’s history in the Lower East Side restaurant supply business influenced his journey. Following his father’s sudden passing when he was 18, Mr. Winnick graduated early, joining the National Guard and working in his brother-in-law’s furniture business.
He later entered the financial sector during its deregulation period, starting as an entry-level retail broker at Burnham & Company, which later became Drexel Burnham. Relocating to Los Angeles in 1975, Mr. Winnick contributed significantly to the concept of high-yield bonds, supporting the development of emerging telecom infrastructure.
