Cromwell is a small town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States, located in the central part of the state. The town is part of the Lower Connecticut Valley Planning Area. The 2020 census population was 14,225.
The town was named after a ship that sailed down the Connecticut River along the Cromwell River. The ship was named after Lord Protector of England Oliver Cromwell. Other theories suggest that the town was named after the 1776 warship HMS Oliver Cromwell, or directly after its protector, Lord Cromwell.
