Who was Carmen Callil?
She went to Europe that same year and settled in London in 1964 after spending some time in Italy. After placing an ad in The Times (“Australian, B.A. wants a job in book publishing”), she started working at Hutchinson in 1965 after serving as a buying assistant for Marks & Spencer. She oversaw publicity for Panther Books’ paperback imprint from 1967 to 1970. She pushed BBC producer Lorna Pegram to hire B.
